The pattern of response that generalizes across different stimuli is represented  by a generalization gradient. It is a graphical representation of the strength of response in the presence of stimuli similar to discriminative stimuli, varying along a continuum.

Gradients vary in the degree of their steepness. Sharp dropping rate of response is indicated by a steep slope as a stimulus differs greatly from the discriminative stimuli. Gradual drop in the response is indicated by a flat slope as stimulus varies greatly from the discriminative stimuli.

To explain pattern of generalisation gradient , distributed representation is helpful. Distributed representation is used to show many yo many relationship and thus help in comparing responses to different and similar stimulus that ultimately determine gradient.
