Neisseria meningitis under ideal lab conditions has a doubling time of ~30 minutes, however in cases of infection the doubling time is closer to 100 minutes. What factors could potentially be affecting the growth rate?

Laboratory conditions are ideal conditions for an organism's growth in order to study it. The organism is introduced into a medium that supports it's growth, unlike the human body. Our body does not create an environment for the growth of any other harmful pathogens. In order to eliminate the pathogen, our body releases antibodies against it. Other factors such as body temperature, the first line of defence, etc influence the doubling time of any pathogen. Only when our immune system fails, an infection occurs.
