What would be the hardest part of an overseas assignment for you and why? What would be the easiest part of an overseas assignment for you and why?
Preparing for an overseas assignment comes with a large number of variables which I believe have their level of implications over my considerations. The following are the points I would consider as hard:
1. Building the necessary cultural understanding
While the language may not be a barrier, having cultural
intelligence is a necessity when performing any business operation.
For example, Japan operates in a drastically different manner when
it comes to the cultural implications over its proceedings. It,
therefore, requires the proper understanding of what is acceptable,
what should be avoided, etc., something which is hard to learn
without first-hand experience.
2. Language
Non-English speaking countries are especially hard to work in
considering the degree of variations it might offer. While most
situations would provide for a translator or a common language to
be used, learning the country’s language can become a necessity,
for decoding the body language of the individuals.
3. Adaptability to time zone differences
While not a major inconvenience, it is something that does take a
while to form into a habit, especially considering the need for
constant communication with the home country.
The more natural aspects can be understood as:
1. Market situation and economics
While it may be different from the home country, it can be managed
easily.
2. Communication and building credibility
Being well versed in aspects of communication, building credibility
is something with which I believe I would not face a problem.
3. Mental Fortitude
While physically, the change might not be substantial,
psychologically it is a different game altogether. But I believe it
would not affect me as much and would be accessible once the
initial time has passed.
