You are interested in the effects of witnessing sexual victimization in prison on trauma symptoms. You asked prisoners if they have ever witnessed another prisoner be sexually assaulted (measured no/yes). You also administer the Trauma Symptoms Checklist (TSC) scale, which has a maximum score of 90 (higher scores equal more trauma symptoms experienced). You hypothesize that prisoners who did not witness sexual victimization will have lower TSC score than prisoners who did witness sexual victimization. Below are the data that tests this hypothesis. (18 points total)

The Davidson Trauma Scale (DTS; Davidson, 1997) is a self-report instrument that indicates the presence and severity of trauma symptoms. It is often used to detect PTSD, with scores ranging from 0 to 136, and a mean in the general population of 11 (Davidson, Tharwani, and Connor, 2002). A clinical psychologist is interested in measuring trauma in a sample of paramedics at the hospital where she works. Using the data in the table below, set up your data file in...
Imagine that you are next interested in discovering whether or not there are differences in minutes spent exercising per day between males (coded as “1”) and females (coded as “2”) in your sample. You hypothesize that males exercise more minutes per day than females. You performed descriptive analyses and found that minutes spent exercising was approximately normally distributed in both groups (skewness = .26 for males, skewness = .07 for females). You therefore decided to perform an independent samples t...
Problem Set 1: The independent-samples t test Research Scenario: A learning psychologist is interested in comparing the success of two different mnemonics (memorization methods) on performance in a memory task. He assigns students to two groups, one which learns and uses a language-based rhyming memory technique, and one which learns and uses a visual “method of loci” spatial memory technique. He then administers a memory task to each group of students. The students are scored based on the percentage of...
What can you conclude from these results? Is Betty’s hypothesis supported? Betty has the following hypothesis: Women are more likely to believe that hard work leads to success than men are. Betty ran a comparison of means test on survey data and had the following results from SPSS. The variable about "hard work" ranges from 1 to 10 with 1 being the strongest belief that hard work brings success and 10 being the strongest belief that hard work does NOT...
You are a marketing expert for a company that is producing a new kind of energy bar. You want to provide evidence that consuming the new type of bar 1 hour before engaging in strenuous exercise of long duration such as running a marathon-will have an effect on performance. You decide to conduct a test at a half-marathon race. You give the bar to a randomly selected group of 40 partidpants (the treatment group). You randomly select a second group...
Open the "Lab Dataset" (HSCI390.sav) you have been using for lab assignments in SPSS. Your analysis will focus on the variables "Gender" (Gender) and "Blood Alcohol Content at last drinking episode" (BAC). Researchers are interested in examining if the mean Blood Alcohol Content at last drinking episode differs between men and women. To examine their research question of interest, they will use data from the sample of CSUN students contained in the HSCI390.sav dataset. Using SPSS for the analysis, you...

Future Time Orientation and Condom Use for AIDS Prevention Background Notes: Researchers administered questionnaires to male college students taking an introductory psychology course. Among other things, they measured future time orientation defined as planning ahead for future events and willingness to delay gratification. (Sample item: “I believe that a person’s day should be planned ahead.”) Based on the scores on the future time orientation scale, they split the male students into two groups – one low in future orientation and...
