N. gonorrhoeae is a pathogen responsible for causing sexually transmitted disease gonorrhoeae. They undergo homologous recombination to bring in variation of their surface antigenic proteins. These are pilin in proteins responsible for the infection in the host and their entry in the host.

The Mut genes responsible for mismatch repair mechanism after replication for correction, can hinder the homologous recombination but still surface antigenic variation can be observed because of the presence of Mut S gene that gets mutated and results in an 3 fold increase of surface antigenic variation.
