You transfer 1 mL of stock solution to tube A, add 9 mL of water and mix. You then transfer 1 mL from tube A to tube B, add 9 mL of water and mix. And finally you transfer 1 mL from tube B to tube C, add 9 mL of water and mix. What is the total dilution factor for this series when comparing the stock solution with tube C?

Answer #1

Answer

  • Dilution factor of tube A is 1 / 10 or 10-1. because 1ml of stock solution is added in tube A having 9ml water that makes up the whole volume 10 ml and results in one part of stock solution and 9 parts of water.
  • Dilution factor of tube B is 1/100 or 10 -2 , because 1ml of tube A (10 -1) solution is added in tube B having 9ml water that makes up the whole volume 10ml.
  • Dilution factor of tube C is 1 / 1000 or 10-3 because 1ml of tube B ( 10-2  ) is added in tube C having 9ml water that makes up the whole volume 10 ml.
