SAE means Soceity of Automotive Engineers, the number next to SAE specify the grade of viscosity of oil ... higher the number higher the viscosity. The SAE number for crankcase lubricant range from 5 to 50. For transmission systems the number ranges from 75 to 250....Hence SAE 40 is used for crankcase lubrication and SAE 110 is used for Gear box lubrication
