Discuss how we can put microbes to work to facilitate our lives: from keeping our landscape clean to making delicious food and beverages. Objectives: Recognize the importance of microorganisms in water and sewage treatment plans. Describe food Microbiology, focusing on both preventative infection methods and the implication of specific microbial taxa in food preparation. Describe the employment of microorganisms in industrial Microbiology. Create a 5-7 page essay summarizing various ways in which we employ microbes to our advantage. Think about their use in the food industry, waste management, healthcare, and conversion of waste product into fuel. Which of these applied Microbiology fields is of interest to you and has the potential for further development in your opinion? Support all your assertions with scholarly resources. Essay: This project should be in proper APA format. There is a requirement of at least THREE scholarly resources( Wikipedia is not allowed) and those resources must be no older than FIVE years old.

**Please help! I was thinking of my three topics being: use of microbes for vaccinations, such as insulin, microbes used in making breads rise (yeast), beer milk, cheese, yogurts, and microbes used in waste management and fertilizer. But if you have different ones then that's fine with me also. My teacher noted that beer, milk, and cheese would be considered one topic classified as food and we need at least three.

Answer #1

Discuss how we can put microbes to work to facilitate our lives: from keeping our landscape clean to making delicious food and beverages.

To answer this question, we will focus on two specific concepts: Bioremediation and cold cooking.

In their metabolic processes, microorganisms transform the nutrients they obtain from environment in simpler substances, and in this process they get matter and energy that they can use for their proliferation.

Man has learned to take advantage of these metabolic processes of microorganisms to obtain different useful products. In this way, microorganisms that can degrade toxic compounds for the environment and convert them into harmless or less toxic compounds, take advantage of the bioremediation process.

There are, for example, microorganisms capable of feeding from hydrocarbons, detergents or polychlorinated biphenyls, so that their metabolism makes them harmless products for the environment. The great diversity of existing microorganisms offers many resources to clean the environment and nowadays, this area is under intense research. Several types of microorganisms that consume oil spills and other toxic substances have been isolated from nature, both directly at the site of the spill and after the toxic materials have been diffused through the soil or reached the groundwater.

On the other hand, the concept of cold cooking refers to the modification of the structure of food increasing its digestibility and its preservation capacity. This typo of cooking, predominantly uses bacteria and fungi which are able to act on different raw food compounds, most of the time creating colonies that ferment their sugars, but at other times decomposing the structure of matter to give molten textures or specific flavors such as umami (savory taste).

The presence of the colonies of these microorganisms prevents the growth of other colonies that could be harmful to our health, or that could accelerate the breakdown of food. The reason is that beneficial microorganisms secrete certain substances that inhibit the expansion of their competitors and therefore help preserve healthy matter.

Suggested topics:

•Usage of fungal mycelia for bioremediation of soils.

•Genetic modification of the bacteria Deinococcus radiodurans to consume toluene and mercury ions from highly radioactive nuclear waste.

•Bacteria capable of degrading some of the oil components.
