Do you agree with the court’s mandate to reduce the prison population so drastically in such a short period of time? Can this be done without endangering public safety?
Prison population has increased drastically since 1970s when the policies were changed to be more stricter and police and judiciary took harsher form of punishments responding to the policies. There are more 2.2 million of people behind bars in America, and this a major ethical and racial dilemma that America is facing today. More number of people in prison is also causing extra financial burden on the state. These are facts that made the court to mandate to reduce the prison population.
The studies made by experts in criminology, law and statistics reveal that there are more number of people behind bars for non-violent reason. About 39% of incarcerated population belong to this category. Releasing them would cut prison population and they pose minimum danger to public safety. Out of this 25% are low level non-violent offenders who could be made to serve community service, probation, or treatment, the other alternatives for incarceration. The other 14% are people who already have served long term incarceration for their crimes and needs to be set free. Thus, freeing this 39% of prison population that is least dangerous to public safety would reduce prison population drastically.
