Q: Please discuss the nursing responsibilities associated with interventional radiology.

Interventional radiology is use of imaging technology with minimal invasive means to diagnose and treat diseases. Interventional radiologists uses fine catheter and needles with the guidance of ultrasound,computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging. It helps to detect disorders of blood vessels like deep vein thrombosis, varicose veins, pulmonary embolism.

Nurses working in interventional radiology department must require high level of cognition and expertise skills. Nurses are responsible to initiate peripheral cannulation to administer medications. Check vitals of the patient before and during the procedure to understand deviation of patients health conditions.

- Nurses must support and inform family members during emergency procedures.

- Maintaining good communication with other members of the department to create good working relationship.

- Obtain consent from the family members and patient.

- Comprehensive nursing care including monitoring of pulse, blood pressure,oxygen saturation and electrocardiogram.

- Creating safe environment for patient and the health workers.

- Following universal precaution and surgical asepsis in preventing infections.

- Preparing sterile trays ,pre packed sets and sterile drapes.

- Assist in skin preparation and draping the patient.

- Keeping accurate count on surgical blades,catheters,swabs and pre filling syringes with needed drugs with proper label.

- Providing sterile dressing on the puncture site.

- Reassure the patient and check the post procedural vitals .

- Check for postoperative pain and administer analgesic as prescribed.
