3. What sort of fundamental ethical concerns are at the core of the principle of Autonomy in health care? (In other words, what values do we hold that this principle reflects?)
3) Principle of Autonomy in health care enables the patients to have control over the health care services provided to them. According to this principle, patients must be given right to make decisions about whether the health care provided to them is good for them or not. Patients must have the choices to use the health care services according to his or her personal values and beliefs. According to the principle of autonomy, it is ethical obligation of the medical practitioners to respect their patient's right to make decisions about their own health.
However, the principle of autonomy should not be allowed ethically in the cases of some deadly diseases like AIDS, Cancer, etc. In this cases, patients might take the decision on the basis of his /her emotions and social stigma which could deteriorate the life very quickly. While making any decision, patients must understand all risks and benefits of the process applied to them. The principle of autonomy must also be restricted in some cases where there is serious concern for the wellbeing of the whole community. For example, it can be restricted in the case of some infectious diseases like tuberculosis, measles, pox, influenza, etc where there is risk of spreading disease to others.
These fundamental ethical concerns are at the core of the principle of Autonomy in health care.
