1. Microorganisms are present everywhere in the form of bacteria ,fungi ,virus , protozoa etc . Microorganisms have benefits and uses across the world from bacteria present in the intestine to digest food to viruses which resist heat . It is being used in many different field like medicine ,food , agriculture and other areas . Certain benefits are :-
- Environmental benefits = Bacteria and fungi not only help to recycle and degrade the waste products but also helps in the production of nutrients which are needed for the growth of plants . It also helps to fix nitrogen for plant use . Viruses help to resist heat to plants and many of the plants store bacteria in the roots to absorb nutrients .
- Microorganisms in food = Microorganisms are used to increase the fertility of soil and increases crop yield and hence the production of bread ,rice and other products. Certain bacteria with probiotic activity are used in some food products like yogurts which help in the proper functioning of digestive system.
- Medical benefits = Bacteria, viruses and fungi are being used in the manufacture of various drugs against deadly diseases like smallpox . These microorganisms are being used to make further advanced drug to fight against severe disease .
Examples - Lactic acid bacteria ,it acts as a strong fertilizer, suppress harmful microorganisms, degradation of organic matter.
Fermenting fungi - decompose organic matter rapidly to produce alcohol ,esters ,and anti -microbial substances . They prevent plants from infestation of insects and maggots.
2. The medical benefits of microorganisms are quite interesting to me because it's always said that microorganisms cause disease ,but when it comes to know that microorganisms are used to treat a disease is something interesting and informative . Many drugs have been found and that too for severe disease like smallpox from Microorganisms. In future by the use of advanced technology and different genes of microorganisms scientists would be able to invent many drugs which will be effective against serious disease.
