The kidneys purify about 200 liters of blood every day and produce about two liters of urine. Fatigue is one of the most frequent complaints of haemodialysis patients and is associated with impaired health related quality of life. Fatigue is documented as a negative symptom experienced by a large number of patients with end stage renal disease undergoing haemodialysis. Fatigue is a distressing symptom and the consequences of fatigue can be overwhelming. Individual have avoidance behavior, experience, a sense of loss and diminished quality of life.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM:

“A Study to Assess the Effectiveness of Leg Ergometric Exercise on Fatigue Among Chronic Kidney Disease Patients Undergoing Hemodialysis at AUM Hospital, Puducherry”.

OBJECTIVES:

 To assess the level of fatigue among chronic kidney disease patient undergoing hemodialysis at AUM Hospital, Puducherry.

 To evaluate the effectiveness of leg ergometric exercise on fatigue among chronic kidney disease patient undergoing hemodialysis at AUM Hospital, Puducherry.

 To associate the effectiveness of leg ergometric exercise among chronic kidney disease patient undergoing hemodialysis with their selected socio-demographic variables.

METHODOLOGY:

The design adopted was pre experimental one group pre-test and post-test design. The main study was conducted in AUM Hospital, Puducherry. The period of data collection was six weeks. Totally 100 hemodialysis patients were selected by using convenient sampling technique. Patient’s fatigue level was assessed with Modified Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy Fatigue Scale.

The gathered data analyzed by using descriptive and inferential statistical method and interpretations was made on the basis of the objectives of the study.

RESULT OF THE STUDY:

The major findings of the study were;

1. In the pre-test the level of fatigue among chronic kidney disease patients undergoing hemodialysis were assessed out of 100 samples 11 (11%) of them had better level of fatigue 89 (89%) of them had severe level of fatigue.

2. In the post-test the level of fatigue among chronic kidney disease patients undergoing hemodialysis were assessed out of 100 samples 75 (75%) of the patients had better level of fatigue and 25 (25%) of the patients had severe level of fatigue. The pre-test mean was 36.27 and post-test mean was 27.84. The paired‘t’ test overall value is 17.18, which is statistically highly significant at the level of p<0.001. This shows effectiveness of leg ergometric exercise to reduce level of fatigue.

3. There are 8 demographic variables such as Age, Sex, Occupation, Period of hemodialysis, Duration of hemodialysis, Number of hemodialyis per week, Engage with any other relaxation techniques. Among these demographic variables there was a significant association between the level of fatigue and the selected demographic variables exist with the educational status.

RECOMMENDATIONS

Based on findings of the present study, the following recommendations have been made,

• The same study can be conducted in different settings.

• The same study can be conducted with true experimental research design.

• The study can be replicated with larger samples for better generalization.

• The study can be done for peritoneal dialysis patients also.

• The study can be done as a longitudinal study.

• The study can be replicated with bio-physical parameters.
