Roles and functions of a professional nurse

Nurses play a dynamic and crucial role in health care. A nurse is usually the first person a patient interacts with. Nurses are responsible for assessing patient's needs and diagnosing illnesses. As such, nurses are an integral part of the comprehensive standards of care and health promotion.

Professional responsibility as applied to nurses refrs to the ethical and morale obligation s permeating the nursing profession. These standards relate to patient care, collaboration with other medical professional s, integrity, morale and the responsibility to effectuate social change

1. Direct care giver
   • Primary function
   • Provides hand- on care to patients.
   • This includes meeting physical needs
   • Nurse maintain patient dignity
   • Nurse gives holistic care to patient. It empathize that whole person is greater than the sum of their parts
   • This means the nurse also address the psychosocial, developmental, cultural and spiritius needs
2. Decision-making
   • It use critical thinking, skills to make decisions, set goals and promote outcomes for a patient
   • This includes

     • Evaluating the outcomes

3. Communicator
