there are two types of diabetes: type1 and type 2 diabetes

Type 1 diabetes

  • hereditary and unpreventable
  • the body does not produce insulin, so the person needs supplemental insulin from the initial stage.
  • affects children and young adults
  • certain viral infections like mumps or rubella cytomegalovirus can trigger type 1 diabetes
  • BMI is mostly within the normal range or low.
  • Rapid, often presenting acutely with ketoacidosis
  • insulin treatment
  • other treatment modalities are same as type 2 diabetes mellitus

Type 2 Diabetes mellitus

  • can be hereditary
  • excess weight, a lack of exercise and an unhealthy diet and certain medications
  • do not need supplemental insulin, but as the disease progresses insulin may be necessary to control blood glucose level
  • BMI (body mass index) - overweight or obese
  • it takes years to recognize disease and often presenting without early symptoms
  • treatment of oral hyperglycemic drugs, regular exercise. dietary control, blood glucose monitoring
