Question

4 FT B 15 FT 80 FT

A typical warehouse roof is supported by steel bar joists as shown in the figure below. The span of each steel bar joist is 80 ft long, 4 ft deep, and are spaced every 15 ft on centers. If the dead load is 42 psf and the live load is 20 psf, determine the factored demand on member AB.

Answer #1

Dead load=42 psf

Live load=20 psf

Factored load=1.2*42+1.6*20=82.4 psf

Tributtary width=15 ft

Factored uniform load on joist=82.4*15/1000=1.236 kip/ft

Span of joist=80 ft

Factored momemt in joist=1.236*80²/8=988.8 kip-ft

Factored shear force in joist=1.236*80/2=49.44 kips
