In discussing the strategy you chose, consider providing a short overview and explain some advantages and disadvantages of the

strategy.

This week we are reading about eight (8) research strategies. I would like to ask each of you to take the lead on the discussion of at least two of the eight (8) strategies.

Phenomenology

Phenomenology can be explained as the experience in very philosophical terms and helps in studying different ways of experience or level of experience along with consciousness. It basically involves the study of different states of consciousness. It helps in creating a better awareness from structures of experience and how the things appear in our experience or how things add certain meaning to our lives. It helps in studying and researching about conscious experience from first person view. There are various type of experiences that are studied under this like thought process, memory, imagination, awareness of the body, volatility of mind, desires etc. It helps in better reflection of one’s own awareness and helps better understand images, concept and meaning of things.

There are couple of advantage of using phenomenology is research

1. It helps a person become more awareness of things and hence helps in better understanding of their experience, meaning better control over emotions.
2. The phenomological research is completely based on real life and lived experiences and hence with this they are able to express better and give their view point.
3. It can be used in a lot of psychological studies and especially helps in improving life through better and enhanced experiences. It helps on make more aware of certain experience like what it is to be a victim of a deadly disease, how does it feel to be survivor of a fatal accident etc.
4. It can help in eliminating certain misconception or wrong notion about certain things by being heard.

Disadvantage

• Although it strategically helps in making more awareness of an experience but it can also negatively impact a person’s mind by gaining full consciousness of that particular situation. At times the individual participant might even find it difficult to express due to a number of barriers.
• There is a lot of research interpretation required and hence it might at times go completely wrong and the data can be baised.
• The results of such research cannot be relied on as with large sample size, the date generated is more generalized.

Grounded Theory

The grounded theory is a systematic process which uses a methodical approach along with data analysis for building theories. It helps in collecting information and hence helps with the process of research and analysis. It is all about thinking about a particular thing followed by the conceptualizing of the data and hence making a research based on it. There is involvement of qualitative research which helps in development of theories through analysis of data. The theory is all about qualitative research and has its own set of pros and cons.

Advantage

• It helps in understanding and analyzing a particular phenomenon which cannot be concluded or explained with the theories that currently exist.
• It is a qualitative process which means there is constant collection of data and its analysis for generation of the theory. The research is not vague and requires intense and critical thinking.

Disadvantage

• It is not easy and definitely more time consuming because there are a lot of data that needs to be analyzed as well as gathered.
• The presentation of the idea, its analysis and its acceptance can be difficult and hence there might be conflicting issues.
