Directions: For each vignette write the unconditioned stimulus (US), the unconditioned response (UR), the conditioned stimulus (CS), and the conditioned response (CR).

The first one is done for you.

Caution: The UR and CR will not always be the same response.

  1. Jean is a participant in a demonstration on classical conditioning in her psychology class. Just prior to her professor squeezing a puff of air into Jean’s eye, the professor’s assistant, Meghan, presents the sound of a horn. Eventually, Jean will not only blink when receiving a puff of air in her eye, but also when she only hears the sound of the horn.

Example:         CS = sound of horn

US = puff of air to eye

UR = eye blink

CR = eye blink

  1. Sam recently went camping with his friends Michael and Brent. On the second day of their trip, Michael was bit by a snake. His immediate reaction was to feel pain. Now Michael finds that whenever he goes camping he feels apprehensive and afraid.

  1. Chris passionately kissed Natalie for the first time while dancing at the prom. Natalie found the kiss to be exhilarating. Now whenever Natalie hears the prom song she experiences joy.

  1. Connie often experiences motion sickness when taking airplane flights. After becoming quite dizzy on a particularly bumpy flight during which lobster was served, Connie developed an aversion to lobster.
  1. While attending Summerfest, Ellen ate a bratwurst prepared by one of the food vendors. Shortly after eating, Ellen got sick to her stomach. Now, whenever she smells bratwurst, she experiences nausea.
  1. Classical conditioning is often used in advertising. The idea is to condition positive feelings to products about which we feel neutral. For example, beautiful models are often shown with the product being advertised. Supposedly, the beautiful model elicits a positive feeling. The product is paired with the model, so when you next see the product you experience a positive feeling.
