In fact, when the Constitution was ratified in 1788, it made no mention of a federal voting age. It was up to the states. In most cases, you had to be 21 years old, and a white, male, landowning protestant to vote.

Although voting was considered an important and prestigious right by early Americans, we never had a consensus on who can vote and who can't. So, when the United States was established as a nation, it made an entry to a world where voting was not a well-known idea. Only an aristocratic elite could vote in England. In contrast with the English method, voting rights were kept as a state subject in the United States instead of a federal subject as new states of America couldn't reach a consensus on the issue. There was no reference to a national voting age even when the Constitution was ratified in 1788. It was actually up to the states, and, generally, the voters are supposed to be a minimum of 21 years old and a white, male, landowning protestant Christian to cast your vote.
