Discuss Herbart as a transitional figure between philosophy and psychology.
It was the concept of Herbart that influenced the emergence of psychology in several different ways. Firstly, he identified that psychology could derived from mathematical science that give more respectability and status to psychology. It was regarded that psychology was an experimental science that quantify mental operations to constitute the development of experimental psychology.
Secondly, Herbart’s and Leibniz’s concept of limen was essential to a modern psychologist, Gustav Fechner, which was eager keen to developed psychology as a true science. Herbart also influenced Wilhelm Wundt to describe the discipline of scientific ways. Different Herbart’s concept such as repression, conflict, unconscious and belief that continue to unravel in the existing world by founding their way into the theory of Fred’s psychoanalytic model.
It was known that Freudian theory was seems like Herbart’s unconscious ideas that seeks to modifies conscious expression by relating with the ideas of unconsciousness. Hence, by these explanations, it seems that there is a transition phase present between rationalism as a philosophy and psychology as a science that fills the mind with the action of perception, creativity, memory, intelligence and cognition in a rationalistic way.
