How did Herbart apply his theory to educational practices?
Herbart was considered as one of the first most educational and mathematical psychologists in the world. He explained the theory of education by giving suitable advice to teachers is as follows:-
1. Review the thing that has been already learned.
2. Prepare the student by giving an overview for new thing of what is coming next in the exam that develops a concept of receptive apperceptive mass.
3. Present a raw thing.
4. Relate the new thing that has already been learned.
5. Show applications of the new thing and what is to be learned by giving an overview.
According to Herbart, apperceptive mass of a student must be relies into consideration by presenting new thing. Student’s apperceptive mass will not be denied until the thing was not compatible with each other. Herbart’s theory of education comes very closer to the Piaget’s modern theory. Piaget said that teaching would be effective when a student can absorb the cognitive actions in a desirable way. Thus, there reflects a major group of similarity between the theories of Herbart and Piaget in accordance with apperceptive mass.
