Summarize Reid’s philosophy of common sense. Include in your answer a definition of direct realism.
Thomas Reid was born in Strachan that was about 20 miles from Aberdeen, Scotland and his father served as a minister for 50 years. Another well-known philosopher, Hume, argued with the Reid’s concept of sensory operations because all experience of sensory information was based on the knowledge of causality and attaining external reality.
Thus, Reid proposed his conceptual thinking towards Hume and postulated a general concept known as common-sense philosophy that is based on the level of faculty psychology. It tells about the condition of humans that were convinced by the existence of physical reality situations that either it will exist or not. It also fills the common sense towards other peoples that are endowed with the potential of dealing and make sense outside this world.
According to Reid, the sensation does not display a true reality but it also shows some immediate kind of experience that is collectively known as direct realism. It is also known as naive realism. It surpasses the immediate level of experience in the environment that shows the conscious awareness in the world.
