Describe Thorndike’s laws of exercise and effect before and after 1929.

Step-by-Step Solution

Solution 1

First major theory of the learning was proposed by the Thorndike. The theory was the combination of the hedonism and the associationism. He stated the principles with the endemic experimental approach. Research findings of Thorndike enforced him for revision of his own theory due to, which he had proposed the law of the exercise, which consists of two major segments, the law of use and disuse.

As per the law of the use, frequent practice of connections or neural associations becomes stronger with time. Thorndike’s law has the resemblance with the law of frequency given by the Aristotle. The law of disuse states that the unused association becomes weaker with the time. After 1929 Thorndike again revised his research findings and he had abandoned his own law of exercise.

He declared that the practice alone is not responsible for the strengthening of an association and passage of time not only contributes towards the weakening of the associations. He discarded his laws of exercise. He added a component of behavior to the associationism. He also added the role of the environment to it.
