Briefly describe the four stages of U.S. psychology.
U.S. (United States) psychology is composed of the four important stages including moral and mental philosophy, intellectual philosophy, the U.S. (United States) renaissance and the U.S. (United States) functionalism. The first stage of the U.S. (United States) psychology is known as the moral and mental philosophy.
During this stage, psychological studies were taught in the combination with the religious indoctrination. American enlightenment was taking place. Locke worked enthusiastically about the topics of nature of consciousness, child psychology and nature of the perception and knowledge as well. Locke’s psychology formed the basis of a psychology in the favor of individual’s belief in the religion.
Stage two of the U.S. (United States) psychology was called as the intellectual philosophy. During this period, Scottish common sense psychology highly influenced the psychology in U.S. (United States) because of, which psychology was declared as the separate discipline to study in the U.S. (United States). A text represented by the Porter showed the transitional period under, which psychology left the realm of the philosophy and raised as a separate discipline to study.
Porter described the psychology as the field of science to study the topics like memory, sense perception, and association of the ideas, consciousness and intellect development.
The U.S. (United States) renaissance referred as the third stage of the U.S. (United States) psychology. During this period, first journal of psychology in the U.S. (United States) named as American Journal of Psychology was launched.
Later the book written by William James, the principles of psychology got published. All of these events emphasized on the psychology’s focus on practicality, individual differences and adaptation to the environment. In this stage, the psychology was discovered as compatible with the evolution. In this period only Titchener started with his program called as the structuralism.
Last stage of the U.S. (United States) psychology is the U.S. (United States) functionalism. School of the functionalism was developed in, which the complete emphasis was given to the combination of the study of the individuals, evolutionary theory, science and practicality. Beginning of functionalism was done by the Sahakian. According to the functionalists, the mind concerning assumptions was actually derived from the theory of the evolution.
