(Word Problem) The telephone keypad decoder of Section 10.6 is severely limited in that it only allows the user to enter numbers. Construct a sequential keypad decoder that supports alphanumeric characters in the same way as many cell phones do by entering different characters through multiple key presses. For example, pressing “2” once enters an “A,” pressing it twice in a row enters a “B,” three times is a “C,” four is a “2,” and more key presses can be used for other special characters. Copy a cell phone with which you are familiar and create this more complex decoder. (Hint: you will need to consider what constitutes a multiple press or a new press of the same key. For example, how will you tell apart a single press for an “A” followed by a double press to enter a “B” and not misinterpret it as a “C?”)
