Teaching nursing skills. A traditional approach to teaching basic nursing skills was compared with an innovative approach in the Journal of Nursing Education (Jan. 1992). The innovative approach utilizes Vee heuristics and concept maps to link theoretical concepts with practical skills. Forty-two students enrolled in an upper-division nursing course participated in the study. Half (21) were randomly assigned to laboratories that utilized the innovative approach. After completing the course, all students were given short-answer questions about scientific principles underlying each of 10 nursing skills. The objective of the research was to compare the mean scores of the two groups of students.
