Solutions For 9780131905429 Chapter 1 Problem 18A

Step-by-Step Solution

Solution 1

The equipment Redi made use of in his experiment was glass jars and gauze covering. Redi took four glass jars. In each of the glass jar he put the same type of meat in the same quantity. He kept two jars uncovered and other two were covered with the gauze. After several days it was seen that maggots developed in uncovered jars. There were no maggots seen in the gauze covered jars.

Gauze acted as the separating compartment for the two jars. It separated the jar content form the houseflies trying to reach the meat. Thus the house flies were not able to reach the meat and lay their eggs. Hence, there were no maggots developed in the meat and Redi could support his theory that life does not originate from non living things.
