Lazarus's theory of stress ,coping and adaptation focus on the way how an individual handles a stressful situation depending upon certain factors

  • Primary appraisal describes about an individual's ability to evaluate the situation at first.Whether it is a threat,gives positive encounter or it can pose any risk for injury
  • Secondary appraisal describes the availability of the types of resources which can help them to handle the stress effectively and come out of it.It can be either internal or external factors to help.
  • The coping is based on the type, outcome, impact of a problem in a problem based coping
  • The last coping method is emotional based coping to overcome the stressful situation

The role of nurse in providing adequate patient care with stressful situation are

First identify the type of problem with the patient and find out its effects on patient. Then assess whether the problem can be solved by self or needs a professional support to care the patient. Plan and implement the work and evaluate for its results and make necessary changes as per the patient needs.
