Answer #1

Ka of HClO = 2.9*10^-8

------ HClO(aq) + H2O(l) ---------------> H3O^+ (aq) + ClO^- (aq)

I ---- 8.5*10^-3 --------------------------- 0 ---------------- 0

C---- -x      --------------------------------    +x -------------    +x

E ---- 8.5*10^-3 -x -----------------------     +x ------------   +x

           Ka     =   [H3O^+][ClO^-]/[HClO]

           2.9*10^-8   = x*x/(8.5*10^-3-x)

           2.9*10^-8*(8.5*10^-3-x)   = x^2

               x   = 1.6*10^-5

    [H3O^+]   = x    = 1.6*10^-5 M

    [ClO^-]   = x = 1.6*10^-5 M

[HClO]   = 8.5*10^-3 -x   = 8.5*10^-3 -1.6*10^-5   = 8.5*10^-3M

part-A

[H3O^+]      = 1.6*10^-5 M

part-B

    [ClO^-]    = 1.6*10^-5 M

part-C

[HClO]     = 8.5*10^-3M
