1. Description of skill : rest and sleep are important for proper physiological functioning of the body. Many patients may complain of disturbed sleep or insomnia due to illness, pain or medications. In such cases the nurse establishes rest and sleep time for the patient or bedtime for the patient. The nurse ensures that the patient follows this schedule for proper rest and sleep.

2. Nursing interventions :

- assess patient’s need for sleep/rest.

- schedule regular sleep and wake time for the patient based on their patterns and needs.

- set duration and frequency of day time naps.

- ensure patient comfort through dim lights, pain management, stress reduction techniques, massage and the elimination of environmental noise.

The client is educated to avoid caffeine, alcohol and heavy meals and exercises before sleep time.
