Answer #1

This is a non stedy state difusion related problem. This can be solved by using Fick's second law.

20 hr would take to reach the same concentration of nitrogen at a depth of 2.0 mm.

The detail solution is shown below.

Here T=800c, D = 2.22 x 1010 m. s-1. Co= 1.38 wt% , Ca=0 wts (s=5 wt%. if x= distance or depth 4 = time . For non- steady stain ✓ 5 ha 1 mm = -2mm ✓tz Vez - 2.5 hour t = 20 hour time = 20 hour for a= 2mm

A differential nitrogen pressure exists across a 2-mm-thick steel furnace wall. After some time, steady-state diffusion of the nitrogen is established across the wall. Given that the nitrogen concentration on the high-pressure surface of the wall is 5 kg/m3kg/m3 and on the low-pressure surface is 0.3 kg/m3 , calculate the flow of nitrogen through the wall (in kg/m2.h) if the diffusion coefficient for nitrogen in this steel is 1.0 ×10−10m2/s at the furnace operating temperature. 9. (4 Marks) A sheet of steel 3 mm thick has nitrogen atmospheres on both sides at 900°C and is permitted to achieve a steady-state diffusion condition. The diffusion coefficient for nitrogen in steel at this temperature is 1.85 x 10-10 m2/s, and the diffusion flux is found to be 1.0 x 10-7 kg/m2.s. Also, it is known that the concentration of nitrogen in the steel at the high-pressure surface is 2 kg/m3. How far into the sheet from this...

Questions and Problems 167 Fick's Second Law-Nonsteady-State Diffusion 5.D3 The wear resistance of a steel shaft is to be im proved by hardening its surface by increasing the nitrogen content within an outer surface layer as a result of nitrogen diffusion into the steel; the nitro- gen is to be supplied from an external nitrogen-rich gas at an elevated and constant temperature. The initial nitrogen content of the steel is 0.0025 wt%, whereas the surface concentration is to be main-...
