However, if patients are not aware of or do not fully understand the research materials provided, are they truly and adequately informed to enter into the clinical research study?

If patients are not aware of or do not fully understand the research materials provided, then they are not truly and adequately informed to enter into the clinical research study because they are not giving voluntary consent after properly understanding the research material that will be performed . It is against the ethics of research .
