Vancomycin is an antibiotic with volume of
distribution of 0.65L/kg (this is an unusual
presentation of the volume of distribution).
If the target plasma concentration is 20mg/L was this the appropriate loading dose for the 70kg patient?
Why would you want to use a loading dose?
Volume of distribution of vancomycin = 0.65 L/kg
So total volume of distribution of the drug = 0.65* 70 = 45.5 L
Target plasma concentration = 20 mg/L
Loading dose = Target concentration * Volume of distribution
= 20 * 45.5 = 910 mg
Since vancomycin has a large volume of distribution, it indicates that the drug is sequestered in tissues.Hence the amount available in the plasma to act on the target site is less.Hence loading dose is required for rapid and more effective drug action.

Drug A has a Vd of 0.65 L/kg. If target concentration TC = 20 mg/L, what is the appropriate loading dose for a 90kg patient? Why would you want to use a loading dose?
volume of distribution for a drug is 16L/kg. what is the required dose/prescription if the desired plasma concentration is 50 ug/L?
An adult male (73 years old, 65 kg) with diabetes mellitus is placed on hemodialysis. His residual creatinine clearance is <5mL/min. The patient is given tobramycin, an aminoglycoside antibiotic, at a dose, at a dose of 1 mg/kg by IV bolus injection. Tobramycin is 90% excreted unchanged in the urine, is less than 10% to plasma protein, and has elimination half-life 2.2 hours in patient with normal renal function. In this patient, tobramycin has an elimination t1/2 of 50hours during...
7. Smokers are known to have about 50% higher CL than nonsmokers for theophylline. If the average observed AUC after administration of 300 mg IV theophylline in nonsmokers is 100 mg.hr/L, what is the expected AUC in smokers after administration of the same 300 mg dose? Theophylline undergoes linear pharmacokinetics 2. After administration of a single 400 mg dose of a drug, a linear plot of the serum concentration-time prorile on a semi-log graph paper showed a y-intercept of 1mg/mL...
Your 210 lb (95 kg) patient can tolerate on a plasma concentration of 0.15 mg/L of hydrocoodone only. The Volume of distribution for hydrocofone is 6 L/Kg. Calculation the dose required for this patient.
Please show work. A 86.5 kg patient has just received a single 500 mg oral dose of an antibiotic. This antibiotic has a 90% oral bioavailability, 8.6 hour elimination half-life, and a 1.1 hour absorption half-life. The drug literature states that the population volume of distribution is 1.1 L/kg for this medication. A blood sample was collected at the maximum drug concentration and reported to be 5.916 mg/L. What is the patient-specific volume of distribution of this antibiotic in this...
You want to achieve a particular plasma concentration of a drug of approximately 81 mg/L in a 70 kg adult male. You know that the total volume of distribution for this drug is ~9L. What dose of drug should you give? (Choose the closest approximate value.) 5670 mg 729 mg correct 10 mg 9 mg In order to achieve the same plasma concentration of the above drug in an adult male who is obese (weighing 125 kg) but otherwise healthy,...

Cefotaxime has a volume of distribution of 0.17 L/kg and an elimination half-life of 1.5 hours. What is the peak plasma drug concentration in a patient weighing 75 kg after receiving 1 g IV of the drug 3 times daily for 3 days?
#1) While reviewing medication orders in a hospital, you encounter an order for tobramycin, an antibiotic, to be administered as intermittent intravenous infusions. Checking this order, you identify the following information: - The patient weighs 266 lbs - The physician ordered 5.2 mg/kg/day given in 6 divided doses - Each dose should be administered as an intermittent intravenous infusion - Each infusion should last 30 minutes - The technician has prepared a 150 mL small volume parenteral bag containing 9...
