Answer #1

ANS 1 : First let us compare the theories by understanding them.

Rudolf Dreikurs' Theory of The Social Discipline: Dreikurs suggested that a behavior is a result of individual's purpose. Our behavior is the result of our own biased interpretations of the world. We do not act according to the reality that surrounds us, but rather according to our own subjective assessment of it. Dreikurs suggested that a behavior is a result of individual’s purposes. We do not simply react to forces that confront us from the outside world. Our behavior is the result of our own biased interpretations of the world. We do not act according to the reality that surrounds us, but rather according to our own subjective assessment of it.Unfortunately, when situations are open to personal interpretations, individuals make unavoidable mistakes in perception. When we choose how to behave, we almost never have all the facts we need to make adequate choices. Therefore, our choices are subjective. Only a few people investigate the conditions present in particular situations. We make assumptions and believe that these assumptions are true. Human beings all have a need to belong and be accepted. When a student is unsuccessful in obtaining acceptance, a pattern of misbehavior begins. All misbehavior is the result of a child’s mistaken assumption about how to find a place and gain status.

Now let us understnd about the Theory of Human Behavious

Murray Bowen Theory of Human Behavior:Bowen's Family Theory is a theory of human behaviors that views the family as an emotional unit and uses systems thinking to describe the complex interactions in the unit.Bowen's focus was on patterns that develop in families in order to defuse anxiety. A key generator of anxiety in families is the perception of either too much closeness or too great a distance in a relationship. The degree of anxiety in any one family will be determined by the current levels of external stress and the sensitivities to particular themes that have been transmitted down the generations. If family members do not have the capacity to think through their responses to relationship dilemmas, but rather react anxiously to perceived emotional demands, a state of chronic anxiety or reactivity may be set in place.

It is clear that while Murrey Bowen Theory have more clinical implications, Rudolf's Theory focused on classroom behavior.

ANS 2: Hence understanding the above two theory brings out the contrast in both the theories. Some of the contrast found are listed below -

A. GOAL - The main goal of Bowenian therapy is to reduce chronic anxiety by

  • 1. facilitating awareness of how the emotional system function
  • 2. increasing levels of differentiation, where the focus is on making changes for the self rather than on trying to change others.

But the goal of Rudolf's Theory of social Behavior is to address behavior issues in classroom setting

B. Origin - Bowen's theory was developed from psychiatric research, whereas Rudolf's theory is based on socail psychology

C. Foundation - It is the foundation of Bowen's concept that the primary source of human emotional experience is the extended family unit, while Adolf believed that one do not act according to the reality that surrounds him/her, but rather according to their own subjective assessment of it.
