LifeStyle Disease

The diseases associated with the way of the person group lives

Lifestyle diseases are:-

Atherosclerosis, Coronary artery disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes mellitus, diseases associated with smoking and alcoholism, drug abuse, some types of cancer(oral cancer, lung cancer, etc), osteoporosis, depression, asthma, and obesity.

What Percentage of Diseases Are Lifestyle-related

According to the statistics of ICMR, approximately lifestyle diseases are contributing more than 61 % since 2016

Two things that contribute to lifestyle disease

1. Unhealthy eating

Unhealthy heating includes over-consumption, lack of fruits and vegetable and increased use of saturated oils. Eating a sufficient amount of fruits and vegetables can prevent cancer, ischemic heart disease and to some extent stroke also. A daily routine of timing for breakfast, lunch, and dinner also helps to avoid gastroenteritis, GERD, etc.

2. Physical inactivity

A daily exercise of 15 minutes or an hour exercises of 3 days in a week may keep you fit and can avoid diseases like Coronary artery diseases, hypertension, and helps to control diabetes mellitus. In sometimes the lack of time, the work pressure, low socio-economic condition, etc leads to the physical inactivity

Three Preventive Measures of Lifestyle diseases

1. Avoid Tobacco Use

2. Maintain a healthy Weight

3. Maintain daily physical activity and limit television watching

1, Avoid tobacco use

Avoidance of smoking by preventing initiation or by cessation for those who already smoke is the single most important way to prevent Cardio Vascular Diseases and cancer. Avoiding the use of smokeless tobacco will also prevent a good deal of oral cancer.

2. Maintain a healthy Weight

The recommended weight of most people should be within the BMI range of 18.5 to 25. Many people with a BMI of less than 25 have gained substantial weight since they were young adults and are also at increased risk of these diseases, even though they are not technically overweight. Inexpensive food energy from refined grains, sugar, and vegetable oils has become extremely plentiful in most countries which is the main contributing factors of obesity in developing countries

3. Maintain daily physical activity and limit television watching

Dramatic reduction in physical activity is seen because of urbanization, increased availability of motorized transportation to replace walking and bicycling and mechanization labor. However, regular physical activity and exercises are key points in controlling obesity and weight control. Daily walking of half an hour has more health benefits of reducing the risk of coronary artery disease, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, etc. The number of hours of television watched per day is associated with increased obesity rates among both children and adults and with a higher risk of type 2 diabetes and gallstones

The importance of modifying the lifestyle pattern for a healthy life

It is important to understand and modify everyone's lifestyle patterns to control and prevent lifestyle disease in your lifetime. The lifestyle disease are preventable in most of the time if we are taking early interventions. So it is my responsibility to understand and adjust the various healthy measures to lead a healthy life.
