The manifestation of Vitamin A toxicity:
Related content:
Vitamin A toxicity can occur due to excess of vitamin A through
animal-based sources like liver and consuming too much vitamin A,
it can lead to serious side effects. It also develops severe
symptoms like liver damage, high cranial pressure, and death. To
prevent this toxicity avoid the high dose of vitamin A supplements
and animal-based food sources. it also causes vision disturbance,
nausea, and death.
Underlying principles:
Vitamin A toxicity is also known as Hypervitaminosis A, the
condition may be acute or chronic when taking too much vitamin
A(carotene) over a short period. Excess vitamin A will be stored in
the liver for a long period, it causes toxicity. Hypervitaminosis A
has no antidote. so prevention is important to avoid
toxicity.
Nursing intervention:
- collect patient complete health history including drugs,
allergies, etc.
- collect patient dietary followup and any medical history of liver
dysfunction.
-check patient serum vitamin A, LFT and CBC level
-Monitor patient visual acuity and vitamin A toxicity
symptoms
- follow correct drug schedule dosage of the vitamin A
- Advice patient if there is any abnormal symptoms should contact
the doctor immediately
- Advice patient to follow strict vitamin A drug regimen and how to
avoid dietary intake which is high in vitamin A to avoid
toxicity.
