Please discuss the different types of urinary catheters, the requirement or need, associated risk factors, nursing care, and subsequent patient education, for each one.

There are mainly three types of catheters

*Indwelling catheters

*External catheters

*Short term catheters

Indwelling catheters :-

These catheter is a catheters which resides in bladder.it is also known as Foley catheter.it can be used for short and long periods of time.

External catheters:-

It is condom catheter placed outside of the body. Used in men. these are more comfortable and chance for infection is less comaparing to indwelling catheters.

Short term catheters:-

Otherwise known as intermittent catheter used for a short period of time after surgery until the bladder empties.

# requirement and needs --

* When you can't control when you urinate

*When you have urinary incontinence

*When have urinary retention

By inserting catheter it helps the patient to get free and comfortable from above furnished reasons.

# associated risk factors :-

* Catheter associated urinary tract infections

*Allergic reactions due to material or latex allergy

*Bladder stones

* Blood in urine

* Injury to urethra

*Kidney damage (long term indwelling catheters use)

*Septicemia or infection of urinary tract kidneys or blood

# nursing care:-

* Should do urinary catheter care in fixed intervals as per hospital guidelines

*Use of sterile techniques throught out the procedure

*Disconnecting drainage bags from catheters only with clean hands

*Keep drainage bag connector clean as possible and change bag periodically in case of long term use

*Drink sufficient about of water daily

*Keep the drainage bag below the bladder level to prevent the back flow

# patient education:-

In case of long term use / indwelling catheters -

*Clean catheter

*Change drainage bags periodically

*Wash drainage bags every day

*Drink plenty of water

*Wash your hands before and after touching catheter with soap and water for atleast 20 mints

*Women should separate the labia and clean the areas from from front to back

*Keep the drainage bag below the bladder level to prevent back flow

*Don't make the drainage bag to lie on floor

*Keep the catheter secured to your thigh to prevent it from moving

Incase of external catheters:-

*Check for latex allergy

*Check for skin peeling or redness
