Family health
Health is a state of complete physical, mental, social and spiritual well being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.( World health organization).
Family: Family is a basic social unit. It is a primary group of people living under one roof, having an intimate relationship.
Social Determinants of health( SDOH)
Social Determinants of health are the factors that influence health and wellbeing of the people, family and community.
Social Determinants of health that affects family are :
1. Social and economic status of the family: This is a strong determinant of family health. Economic status of the family is mainly based on income of the family members. If a family is having high income, their living standard also will be high in terms of housing,good quality food.
2. Social class and social norms/attitudes
Social class of the family is an important determinant that affects family health. It is observed in all society that low socio-economic class people are in risk of malnutrition , maternal and child mortality and communicable diseases.
Social discrimination such as gender, race or aboriginal status are some factors that also influence a family's health. People who experience the issues regarding discrimination often decline off quality medical services, good food and health facilities.
3. Educational status of the family members are a significant factor that determine the health of the family members. Good educational status usually leads to fair job, high salaries and good living condition. Education removes the ignorance about health behaviours.
4. Social support system
Social support system for a family includes relatives, church and community group they belong to. These support systems are playing a major role in family's emotional and social health.
5. Technologies and Mass media
Today' s world running behind the new emerging technologies. Mass media influences the relationship between the family members greatly. The disadvantages of over use of mobile and internet services affects the warmth, love and intimcy between the family members. It in turn affects health. Obesity, Hypertension, Diabetes, Coronary artery diseases and Mental disorders are common in today's society. Idleness resulting from the increased technologies are the main cause of these diseases.
Health promotion strategies for the family
These strategies are aimed to promote family health and prevent disease and injuries for the family members.
* Promote physical activity and regular exercise
* Educate the family members regarding balanced diet
* Promote education
* Encourage the mothers for the breast feeding for the baby( 6 months of exclusive breast feeding)
* Health education regarding child safety
* education regarding communicable disease prevention
* Instruct regarding the importance of immunization
* Smoking and Alcohol cessation or control programmes
