The argument against minimum wages is fairly straightforward: minimum wages make it more expensive to employ workers, without making them more valuable. Company faced with costlier workers could just decide to make do without as man The case against minimum wages is pretty straightforward: minimum wages makes hiring employees more costly, without making workers more productive. Faced with more expensive jobs, company might simply decide to do without as many employees. Business may even try to replace certain employees with machines for longer periods of time, or move to places without minimum wages (or lower minimum wages).

The other side starts by arguing that companies typically have a lot of power over how much they pay their employees — especially low-wage workers who are often not union-protected and face high competition for jobs. It encourages companies to pay workers less than the value they bring to the business Minimum Wage Supporters often say that minimum wages can have positive ripple effects: more money in the pockets of workers means more productivity and more overall economic activity.

The real reason we need minimum wage has nothing to do with employees benefits or job availability. In-work benefits provide adequate welfare and the State is perfectly happy to create the illusion of employment to please voters. No, the minimum wage is needed to protect taxpayers against the corporations ' legitimate urge to get something for nothing.
