Dissossiative amnesia:
symptoms : mental health problems like depression, anxiety,
suicidal thoughts and behaviour. Memory loss of certain time
periods, loss of personal information, inability to cope with
emotional and precessional stress.
patient may feel a sense of being detached from themselves and
their emotions, a perception of people and things around them as
disorted and unreal, significant stress and problem in
relationships or at work.
General treatment: a combination of different therapy is
recommended. Psychotherapy is a main treatment for dissociative
disorders. This may focus on harmful thinking patterns and
behaviour of the patient.
nurse implications and diagnosis: a complete nursing and
neurological assessment should be done for any signs of self
mutilation or suicide attempts and neurological data has to be
assessed.
The diagnostic test like neuro imaging, electroencephalogram are
done to rule out neurological or other illness symptoms.
Dissociative identity disorders:
symptoms: an impulsivity, self destructive behaviour , self
harming tendencies, altered conciousness, and amnesia are seen
patient may feel detached from self, mood swings, anxiety, flash
back episodes.
General treatment: treatment is talk therapy. Cognitive
behavioural therapy and family therapy can also recommended.
Nurses implications and diagnosis:
nurses should provide a safe environment protecting patient from
self destruction behaviour. Assist them in learning new coping
skills and provide environment for socialisation. A review of
symptoms and patient history contribute to the diagnosis of
disorder. Perform test to rule out the physical condition that
causes symptoms has to be done.
