• Values, norms, guiding beliefs, understandings shared by members of an organization and taught to new members as correct
-Is shared
-Is learned
-Evolves slowly
-Is mostly invisible
-Guides behavior
-Is powerful

Organizational Culture Can:

-Help workers understand the HCO
-Help employees figure out what to do in situations not covered by rules, standards and policies
-Strongly influence employees to work, act, think, feel and behave a certain way.

Factors affecting Organization culture:

1) Individual working with the organization

2) The sex of the employee

3) The nature of the business

4) The culture of the organization is also affected by its goals and objectives

5) The management and its style of handling the employees

• By managing forces and factors that create culture, managers can shape the culture to desired beliefs, norms and values
-Examples of tools and methods:

  • state new values in mission/values statements,
  • model new culture by demonstrating correct behavior consistently in daily work,
  • train staff to understand and apply new beliefs and norms

-Managers must work persistently to shape culture of HCO; short term quick fixes will not last.
