What is a diuretic most likely to cause hypokalemia as an expected adverse effect with usual doses?
The diuretic which is most likely to cause hypokalemia are loop diuretics and thiazide diuretics. These diuretics increases the delivery of the sodium to the distal segment of the distal tubule and hence will lead to the increase loss of the potassium. This occurs because the increase in the distal tubular sodium concentration will stimulate the sodium pump which is sensitive to aldosterone in order to increase sodium reabsorption and this will ultimately decrease the potassium reuptake.
