Think about a healthcare organization that you know (or have researched). In a 1-2 page paper, explain why they should devote time to planning. Identify and describe three things the organization can accomplish by the planning process.

Systematic planning is a proactive, structured process implemented by organizations consisting of the dynamic use of specific selected external opportunities that engage and develop internal competencies with the aim of fulfilling the organization's mission and creating value for its stakeholders.

The process of strategic planning is programmable, systematic, rational, and holistic and integrates the short, medium and long term, allowing the healthcare organization to focus on relevant and lasting transformations for the future.

There are 5 indicators that, in combination, would suggest the need for systematic planning in a health care organization -

  • If we assume that patients are the only clients of a health organization , its obvious that in the future the Health Organization will be treating patients who are increasingly better informed, aware of their rights, demanding, and with a growing capacity to choose their healthcare provider.

  • The system of resident physicians, access to updated knowledge, and continuous training have led to high level of specialization and excellence among professionals and they have become easily accessible outside the major centers of large cities.

  • Wise use of the available manpower and resources of the organizations

  • The focus is no longer solely on the quality of the product or service, but also on how this is transferred to the client and their experience. Health Organizations no longer simply focus on carrying out the processes to the best of their ability, but on achieving patient satisfaction and obtaining the best results possible.

  • Increases in the size of the population, their needs, and the diagnostic and treatment options offered has led to physical growth in the size of Health Organizations and increased organizational complexity. A clinical service may already be too large a productive unit, and decomposing it into highly complex sub units may have to be considered. Another source of complexity arises from the need to act in collaboration with primary care in relation to a range of diseases, especially chronic ones.

An effective planning process will allow the health organization to -

  • Good Human Resource management in a health care organization leads to increased job satisfaction of the service providers , leading to staff stability and which will eventually lead appropriate use of the manpower and resources available to give the highest quality of health services to the client.
  • With adequate planning the Health Organization will be able to meet the increased organizational complexity and improved collaboration, hence adapting to the increasing demand of the clients and achieve client satisfaction.
  • Ensure recruiting professionals with high level of specialization and excellence will increase the standards of health services and along with this increase in demand of the organizations.
