ANSWER:
ANTIVIRALS: ACYCLOVIR
EXPECTED PHARMACOLOGICAL ACTION:
Acylovir is an antiviral drug.It is converted by thymidine kinase to acyclovir monophosphate.It preventing the furthur viral DNA synthesis without causing any damage to the normal cellular metabolism.
THERAPEUTIC USES:
It is mainly used against the viral infections in the case of Herpes simplex infection, HIV, shingles, prevention of viral infection in the immunocompromised patients and herpes simplex disease.
COMPLICATIONS:
complications like diarrhoea,Nausea,vomitting,fatigue,body weakness and malaise.
MEDICATION ADMINISTRATION:
The initial dose is 200mg three times daily if the illness is severe it can be increased to 400mg two times daily.The dosage depends on the disease condition.In case of chicken pox dosage of 20mg/kg , 4 times daily for 5days.
CONTRAINDICATIONS/ PRECAUTIONS:
It is contraindicated in the clients with milk protein hypersensitivity. Hypersensitivity to acyclovir.
INTERACTIONS:
There is no known interaction with food and other herbs.Some antivirals may increase the half life, and nephrotoxicity
NURSING INTERVENTIONS:
Nurses should closely monitor if there is any allergic symptoms seen in the patient. Activated charcoal may be administered for incase of the removal of the unabsorbed drug.
EVALUATION OF MEDICAL EFFECTIVENSS:
gradually the client relieving from the symptoms which are caused by the virus.
CLIENT EDUCATION:
the buccal tablets should not be chewed. Allow the tablet to dissolve.if the tablet accidentally fall replace it with new one.
