EXERCISE #2 - OSHA - MANAGING HEALTH AND SAFETY IN THE WORKPLACE

In 1970, the U.S. Congress enacted the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) to address ever-increasing instances of death and injury in the workplace. The reason (and authority) for the Congress to become involved in this issue is because the injuries imposed a substantial burden upon and hindrance to interstate commerce. The goal of the Act, which established the Occupational Safety and Health Administration within the Department of Labor, was to promote a safe and healthy working environment for all employees.

The "Small Business Handbook" is 2005 publication by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration provides security leaders and their organizations a cost-effective approach for managing health and safety at the work site by reducing occupational fatalities and injuries.

After carefully examining this Handbook and conducting any additional independent research as necessary, explain the main requirements of OSHA that you, as a security director, must understand and implement to ensure your company is indeed providing a safe environment for its employees and is compliant with applicable laws and regulations. Incorporate into your response how your routine and periodic responsibilities as a security director are impacted by the Act.

As a security director and following OSHA guidelines there are more responsibilities to take guard of all the security related issues in a company.

According to OSHA these guidelines are only applicabe to those companies working in the United States only. Hazardous prwvenprev and control is the main function of the security director. The hazard causing environment should be figured out and the possible actions should be taken care of to avoid a big tragedy. The workers working and all the equipments should be insured. The workers should have a medical attention according the working site.

The accideny investigation is the another responsibilty. The accidents are to be avoided but if any happens it's the primary duty of the director to take care of this. Initially a police complaint should be registered and the affected employees should be treated properly. And then figure out the reason for the accident band take immediate measures to make sure that such a situation won't happen again.

Management of personal protective equipment. The employees must me made sure to use these kind of equipments so that make them safe. In case of people working with radiation they should be trained to use the lead shields and teach them the maintenance too.

Injury and illness records should be maintained. It s the one of the important thing to be taken into account. The records should be must and the medical attention provided should be specially noted. If same kind of illness is speeding in the work site it is to be noted and reported to the higher team.

Exposure records are to be kept. The exposure of the employees to toxins are to be recorded . These are the main procedures to be followed by the security director.
