Description: It is the process of insertion of a nasogastric (NG) tube to manage GI dysfunction and provide enteral nutrition via tubes that may or may not bypass the stomach/GI pathway.

Indications:Providing feed/administration of drugs
Gastric lavage (Washing the stomach Compression)
Application of pressure to prevent hemorrhage
Decompression of stomach contents

Outcomes/Evaluation:The possible outcomes are: relief of nausea, vomiting or distension, providing nutrition/delivering drugs, cessation of active bleeding, removal of stomach contents. Evaluation: Overall patient comfort, proper tube functioning ​​​​​​, gastric imaging if needed, improved symptoms

Potential Complications and intervention: ​​​​​​Complications: displacement of tubes, erosion of nares or any pathway, aspiration of contents

Nursing interventions: pre: evaluation of client, review history and patient details, prep the area of procedure, keep equipment ready, educate patient

intra: prop the patient, clean the nares, finalize proper tube placement using XRay

post: check patient vitals, provide comfort to patient

Client Education: tell patient about procedure so that they're comfortable, ask them to report any incidence of coffee coloured vomit, blood in vomit, ensure hydration, maintain oral hygiene
