Temperature regulation or thermoregulation is the mechanism in which the internal body temperature is maintained by various mechanisms in the body itself.it is the ability of the human body to keep its body temperature within certain boundaries even when the surrounding temperature is very different.it is very important to organisms because bodies of plants and animals function normally at a specific temperature range.
The ideal body temperature in human is 37-degree celsius.
The hypothalamus plays a key role in regulating body temperature.it regulate and tune the this complex process by working with other parts of the body. Hypothalamus regulates body temerature responding ton internal and external stimui and making adjustment to keep bosy within the normal body temperature.
UNDERLYING PRINCIPLES:
As the age progress the body progressively decline in its ability to regulate the body temperature. The reasons are
1)When age progress the sdecrease in amount of fat below skin makes it harder to stay warm.
2)Ageing decreases the ability to sweat.
3) with age vitals signs -body temperature, heartrate blood pressure etc change.
4)Medicines that are used to treat health problems may affect the body temperature.
NURSING INTERVENTIONS:
Nurses need to be particularly vigilant in protecting eldelrly patients regarding their fluctuations in thermregulation, both in community nd in acute and long term care institutions.
The room temperature and amount of clothing that a younger care giver finds comfortable may not be sufficient for elderly person.Nurse are responsible to teach the care givers and family personnel regarding the effective methods to regulate the temperature fluctuations in elderly patients.
