Answer #1

1.a)The first test that i would like to do is Gram staining.

Gram staining shows the morphology of the bacteria i.e., cocci or bacilli and also if the organism is gram +ve or gram -ve.

b) The result of the test- The organism is gram +ve cocci.

Yes, Catalase test will be helpful for determining the unknown.

Catalase test will help to differentiate if the gram +ve cocci is Staphylococcus or Streptococcus. Staphylococcus is Gram +ve and streptococcus is Gram -ve.

c) The result is- Catalase +ve. So the genus of the organism is Staphylococcus.

d) The sheep blood agar shows complete hemolysis i.e., Beta type of hemolysis. So the unknown organism will be - Staphylococcus aureus.

There are 3 types of hemolysis.

1.Alpha (a ) -hemolysis: incomplete lysis of RBC - Greenish, cloudy zone around the colony. Example- Streptococcus pneumoniae.

2. Beta ( b)-hemolysis: complete lysis of RBC - A clear zone with a clean edge around the colony. Example-Staphylococcus aureus.

3. Gamma ( g)-hemolysis: no lysis of RBC - No change in the blood agar around the colony. Example- Staphylococcus epidermidis.

Do give a thumbs up. Thank you.

in the Micro lab, I got an unknown microorganism. The assignment is to find the microorganism by performing various tests on it. My hypothesis is: Unknown organism is virulent and can cause diseases in the human organism. My question: Which 4 test should I do first to detect my organism and why those tests in particular? (I am thinking aerotolerance, endospore, hemolysis...) depending on each test result can you give an example of the microorganism that it can be? Colony...

You are given a mixed culture of two organisms in a small tube of TSB. These two organisms include a Gram-negative strain (your bacterial strain to identify) and a Gram-positive strain (a contaminant). Your first task is to isolate these organisms which will help you identify which Gram-negative strain you are working with. 1) You inoculate two streak plates on TSA media and MacConkey Agar using aseptic technique. For each medium, state whether the medium is selective, differential, or neither and...

Question 6 1.5 points Save Answer Bacterial ID Flow Chart.docx A student in a microbiology lab was assigned the task of determining the identity of a bacterial species. First she performed a quadrant streak on a TSA plate. After 24 hrs. incubation, she aseptically picked up a portion of a single isolated colony for a gram stain. Her results indicated purple spherical-shaped bacteria that grew in grapelike clusters with no apparent endospores. She then performed a series of biochemical tests...
