where a person falls on the spectrum when it comes to five personality traits: openness to experience, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness and neuroticism. The researchers examined age groups most at risk for distracted driving: teens ages 16 to 19 and older adults ages 65 to 85.

Drivers who are more extroverted and open to new experiences may be a higher risk on the road,

Researchers found that extraverted people were more prone to distracted driving (which you might expect), but the researchers also found that the conscientious subjects were also more likely to engage in risky driving behaviors. People who are conscientious are known to be organized and dependable, and even obsessive.

"it may be that these individuals feel the need to respond immediately to text messages from peers, even in a potentially dangerous context, such as driving in a car, in order to maintain peers' perception of their dependability,"

The cooperative nature, including respect for rules and authority figures, of individuals who score high in agreeableness may make them less likely to engage in distracted driving behaviors because of their deference to road regulations and concern for safety.

Overall, way too many people are texting and driving, regardless of personality traits. With an estimated 1.6 million car crashes resulting from phone distraction happening every year, even one person on the road with a phone in their hand is too many. Always focus on driving when you’re driving. Your friends can wait — your safety can’t.

distracted driving — you know, checking your phone and texting while driving, which is highly dangerous and should never, ever be a risk you take.
