Washing with alcohol remove stain from non acid fast staining bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus but acid fast bacteria such as M. smaegmatis due to presence of mycolic acid retain stain and appears red coloured. Alcohol acts as decolouriser.

If alcohol is not used then both of the cells such as  S. aureus And M. smegmatis appears red in colour and methylene staining has no effect because it does not acts as counterstain in this case.

That's why both bacterial cells S. aureus and M.smegmatis appear red in colour. That's slide is right in this case.
